Craigs Compassionate Cafe is the only meal service available for homeless and low-income individuals in Crook County. The Cafe reopened in June of 2021 after being closed for almost a year and completely remodeled. We now have a larger, professional kitchen to prepare our meals in. Our project is unique in that not only is the facility provided to us by the Church of the Nazarene, but we have collaborated with the Facebook Data Center who supplies us with food that is left over or they are unable to serve for their daily meal services they provide to their employees. Our volunteers are then able to provide meals to the guests using the donated food, and adding additional food if needed. We have been operating the cafe primarily with community volunteers and it would be very difficult to expand the program without the addition of a kitchen/cafe manager. During the meal hours we will have our Case Manager/Housing Navigator available to meet with our guests and connect them to other services in the community and to assist them in their journey to food security and self sufficiency.
In these tough economic times, the need for food and hot meals continues to rise, not only for the chronic homeless, but for families and others who before this were self-sufficient. We are averaging almost 10 - 15 people every day that includes some of our sheltered clients as well as hungry members of the community we serve. Our service acknowledges that outside of sheltering from the elements, nourishment is the most critical basic need. In the case of chronic homeless often addicted to drugs and alcohol, nourishment is a critical element to rebuild health and focus on positive rehabilitation efforts. It will be impossible to expand our program without hiring a kitchen/cafe manager to handle the additional work load required.
