The people receiving beef donations from The 1017 Project include those from different geography, backgrounds, cultures, and ranges of need. The 1017 Project feeds diverse groups, including people of different races, genders, ethnicities, abilities, religions, cultures, faiths, and ages. We discriminate against no one. In addition, community food assistance programs are often unwilling participants in "systemic minimization," whereby sub-par food products are being shuffled from grocery stores, based on "sell by" dates, to agencies that rely on donations to stock their shelves or plan menus. The 1017 Project has re-imagined the quality of protein products that local food banks have access to by building a sustainable system to donate fresh-from-the-butcher beef to entities serving food-insecure people. The 1017 Project's "first and best" beef is bypassing the grocery store shelves and being delivered straight to the most vulnerable citizens of our communities.
The 1017 Project was founded and is administered by ranching community members who live in rural Crook County. The revenue-generating capacity of the cattle raised for food banks is powered by the local ranching community's participation in team roping events, arena leases and private cattle leases. Further, 1017 leaders collaborate directly with 40 regional food banks to understand, plan for, and meet pantry supply needs for food- insecure families, while adjusting cattle raising and herd purchases seasonally in order to be responsive to changes in area needs.
The 1017 Project raises and donates the cattle. The food banks and community kitchens pay a small shared- maintenance fee that helps offset feed and USDA processing/packaging costs. This working partnership reduces costs to both parties. The 1017 Project beef reaches hungry families within days of being picked up from the butcher, making it even fresher than what the average consumer purchases from a grocery store.
