Bayview HEAL Zone

A Good Idea

Description

The Bayview HEAL Zone is a network of community partners united in their efforts to prevent diseases that often result from being overweight or obese. Activities and strategies designed to help people eat better and move more include lowering calorie consumption, increasing fruit and vegetable consumption, and increasing physical activity in institutional and community settings. Some ways to provide residents with more healthy options include free exercise classes and cooking demos, helping stores offer more fresh produce, and creating safer walkways and recreational places.

Goal / Mission

The goal of the program is to reduce chronic disease health disparities by making the healthy choice the easy choice.

Impact

The Bayview HEAL Zone has brought together a variety of organizations and supported healthy eating and active living projects in the community.

Results / Accomplishments

The Bayview HEAL Zone’s Food Guardian program has converted three corner stores, which are now suppliers of fresh produce. The Bayview HEAL Zone mobilized residents and community-based organizations to form the MLK Park Association and improve MLK/Bayview Park. The network has also engaged Carver Elementary families and over 200 students are working with a Physical Education Specialist. The Bayview HEAL Zone encouraged active transportation, from funding the refurbishment of 250 unclaimed bicycles to assisting in the development of the Bayview-Hunters Point transportation business plan.
