Percent of Students With Untreated Dental Decay: 1st and 2nd Grade

Measurement Period: 2020
The percent of 1st and 2nd graders in Central Oregon with untreated dental decay in schools that participate in the School Dental Sealant Program.

Why is this important?

Dental caries is the most common chronic disease among children and is 5 times more common than asthma (American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, n.d.). Untreated decay or other oral health problems in children can result in attention deficits, learning and behavior challenges in school, and problems speaking, sleeping, and eating (The California Society of Pediatric Dentistry and California Dental Association, n.d.). In Central Oregon, one-quarter to one-half of first and second graders that were screened in selected Central Oregon schools had untreated tooth decay (Kemple Memorial Children's Dental Clinic, n.d.)
